Get Out and Vote for Kate!

We need to do everything we can to help Kate Marshall win her special Congressional election for NV-CD2 on Tuesday, September 13th.

Kate is someone we can count on to stand up for middle-class families in Congress — and fight against the reckless, hard-right Republican policies that seek to reduce the deficit on the backs of working families and seniors, while protecting tax subsidies for Big Oil companies.

But she’s locked in a tough special election battle right now, and her opponent is lining up lots of big-time Republican support.

A victory here, in NV-CD2, a seat which has never yet been held by a Democrat, will also be vital to preserving Medicare and Social Security from hard-right House Republican attempts to destroy those programs as we know them.  Winning this special election for Democrats will send a powerful message to pundits and political insiders in Washington — not to mention Republicans across the country.

As Democrats in Congress work to close tax loopholes for companies that ship jobs overseas, preserve and protect Medicare, and reform our government so it works more efficiently and effectively for everyone, we need a leader like Kate fighting for us.

You still have time to ‘early vote’ today or tomorrow.  After early voting ends, you last chance to help us elect Kate will be on Tuesday, September 13th.  That means we only have a small window to make a difference for Kate Marshall — and it’s getting smaller every minute.  If you haven’t voted already … make every possible effort to get out there and VOTE!

Oh … and one last request from the campaign … “Can you help Kate by making a contribution of $10, $25 or more to help kickoff Get Out the Vote (GOTV) weekend?”

Rove in Nevada

Dear Friends:

The GOP has set its sights on defeating Kate Marshall’s bid for Congress. Karl Rove and Rovian tactics are being put into play and they’re using huge amounts of money to back their agenda.

From the Marshall campaign:

“Yesterday the NRCC started airing their second attack ad and if you can believe it’s even more dishonest than their last– another indication that the GOP sees our path to victory as clearly as we do.  Since the NRCC previewed the Wednesday, several reporters have already called it out as false and just last night Jon Ralston called it “patently false” and “utterly misleading,” on his show that airs across Nevada. We need that $3,635 more in donations so we can continue to stay up strong on the air and win on September 13.

The NRCC’s ad is a complete joke and as I referred to above, even before the ad began to air, both the Las Vegas Sun and the Reno Gazette-Journal reported it was based on bogus GOP “research.”   We need your supporters to make those grassroots contributions of $100, $50, $25 or anything they can afford so we can reach our goal of $15,000 by midnight tonight. Every last dollar counts at this point and you know our efficient and strategic campaign operations allow us to do more with our resources.

Yesterday, Amodei went to DC to raise money from more special interest groups.”

From Emily’s List:

“Karl Rove is back. As if the Tea Party’s efforts in Nevada aren’t enough, now Rove is flooding the state with hundreds of thousands of dollars to support a right-wing, conservative agenda. And defeating Kate Marshall, the EMILY’s List-endorsed pro-choice Democratic candidate in Nevada’s 2nd congressional district, is within his sights.

Her opponent, right-wing state legislator Mark Amodei? He’s already aligned himself with the Tea Party, threatening not to support any plan to raise the debt ceiling, which could put our fragile economy at grave risk.”

Is that fear I smell or is the [NRCC] just happy to be here?

Have you heard the news?  The Washington Republicans are panicking about our race because they know we can win– and we will win!  Even Nevada political newsman, Jon Ralston wrote, “Is that fear I smell or is the National Republican Campaign Committee just happy to be here?” [Las Vegas Sun, 7/31/11]

First, it was the quarter of a million dollars they just spent buying TV ads against me.

Now they’re so worried that they’re even sending out the House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor, to raise some desperate cash for my opponent. Eric Cantor isn’t just the House GOP’s second in command, he’s an architect of the dangerous Republican plan to end our Medicare.

You can help us stop the Republican plan to end Medicare and their special interest fueled fundraising advantage with a contribution of $100, $50 or whatever you can give.

Last week, I asked you to help me raise $15,000 to make our next TV buy  that will help us to make sure Nevadans have the facts about the National Republican Campaign Committee footing the bill to attack me. Their attack ad has already been called out as  “not true” by the Reno Gazette-Journal’s Fact Checker. [Reno Gazette-Journal, 7/31/11] We’re almost halfway to that goal, but I need you to dig down deep right now and help put us over the top. Will you please make a contribution of $25, $50 or more to keep our TV ads on the air for another week?

My opponent has made it clear that he’s just going to let guys like Cantor and the national GOP establishment run his campaign and do his dirty work. These are the same Washington Republican insiders whose refusal to compromise puts our jobs, families and seniors at risk through reckless cuts to Medicare and Social Security.  My opponent is standing lock-step with Eric Cantor and the rest of the Beltway Republicans and that is bad news for Nevada.  But you know where I stand, with you!

Please stand with me against these powerful outsiders, folks who don’t have Nevada’s interests at heart. Tell them that Nevadans want independent, hard-working leadership in Washington!

Thank you,

P.S.  We have an aggressive plan that will lead us to victory on September 13, but we need your help to execute it. So please click here to make a contribution that will keep our message going strong on TV.

35 Days ’til Default; Even FOX Business Gets It

According to FBN’s Elizabeth MacDonald, if lawmakers can’t reach an agreement on the debt ceiling the bond markets stand to lose $100 billion.  Thus, not raising the debt ceiling could adversely cost the United States even more, from bond holders to mortgage holders, in terms of interest costs on debt.

Typically, loan rates are tied to 10-year Treasury bonds.  With ratings companies poised to downgrade the U.S. Government’s credit rating to double-A, or even worse, single-A, resulting interest rate increases could prove devastating to taxpayers.  Those rate increases would dramatically escalate the size of the US Debt and budget deficits.  But the devastation wouldn’t stop just there, it would impact what each and every one of us pay out each month for our mortgages, our car payments, and everything else we purchase from each and every retailer.  Because interest rates are based on U.S. Treasuries, interest rates on loans to do business across this nation will skyrocket.

FBN’s Elizabeth MacDonald told the audience, “The US missed a payment on $112M in debt back in 1979 and that missed payment basically cost the U.S. $86B mapped across the whole spectrum of U.S. Treasuries.”  We’ve already seen a spike in rates portending what is to come, but GOP members of Congress and candidates like Mark Amodei are blind to the signs and deaf to anything other than that being spewed forth by the GOP’s plutocratic backers.

According to the S&P, bond prices would fall dramatically if the US were to lose its triple-A rating and interest rates will spike even higher.  MacDonald likes to watch what’s happening in the credit default swap market as she feels it acts like a weather vane as to what’s happening or about to happen in the rest of the market.  Click on the GRAPHIC above to watch Elizabeth MacDonald explain the dilemma facing the Congress.  [DEFINITION:  Credit Default Swap—A security that transfers the risk of default on a fixed income product to a different party.]

NV-CD2 doesn’t need representation from someone like Mark Amodei who is willing to pander for votes from the extremes on the right, which would portend economic disaster for the rest of us.  Such a stance would not balance our national budget, nor would it close budgetary deficits.  In fact, it would devastate not just the federal budget via increases in interest rates, it would devastate family budgets all across this nation.

It’s time for a change in leadership and voice for sanity in NV-CD2 .  It’s time to elect someone who understands economics and how to a treasury actually works, that there is both an income stream as well as an outgo stream.  It’s time to put someone in the NV-CD2 seat who has OUR backs, instead someone whose aim is to protect the interests of the banking, finance and oil industries.

So, as this campaign season ensues, turn the channel whenever you see an ad from Karl Rove’s Crossroads organizations or any of the other right-wing organizations attempting to buy your vote.  Just tune it all out and instead vote for sanity by voting for Kate Marshall on September 13th.
